Resolution 2000.09: Establishment of a National Registry of Convicted, Dangerous, High-Risk Sex Offenders

Whereas, The recommendations resulting from the 1993 Ontario Coroner’s Inquest into the death of Christopher Stephenson, who was kidnapped and murdered by a released, convicted pedophile, called for both federal and provincial governments to establish a registry of convicted, dangerous, high-risk sex offenders, and

Whereas, The federal government has yet to establish such a registry, therefore be it

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada in 80th annual national convention assembled, urge the Solicitor General of Canada to establish a national registry of sex offenders to be made available to all recognized law enforcement agencies across Canada.

Detailed Action Plan

  • Write to the solicitor general urging the establishment of a National Sex Offenders Registry.
  • Contact local police and local social services agencies for information and support.
  • Become familiar with Christopher’s Law (Ontario Bill 31).
  • Invite a speaker from a local law association or university school of law to address the issue.
