A Message from the National President Betty Colaneri:

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Hétu, executive director of Development and Peace Caritas Canada.

Carl was known to many of our members and attended numerous conventions over the years bringing awareness and insight through his work as national director of Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) Canada and as executive director of Development and Peace Caritas Canada.

Last year, at the CNEWA Anniversary Gala, I had the privilege of speaking with Carl and shared with him that members across Canada were praying for him. As he expressed his gratitude for those prayers, his humility and faith shone through.

A humble man of profound faith, Carl dedicated his life to advocating for those living in poverty and hardship through the developing world. With great courage and compassion, he journeyed into many war torn regions, offering hope, dignity and solidarity to those most in need. His life truly exemplified a deep commitment to empowering God’s mission through service to others.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Lorraine; his children and grandchildren; and all the many friends and colleagues whose lives were touched by his kindness, faith and witness.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he enter his eternal home to hear the words he so richly earned “Well done, good and faithful servant”.

At the CNEWA 20th Anniversary Gala on November 7, 2025.
