Resolution 1995.02 Abortion Funding

Whereas, The Catholic Women’s League of Canada adopted resolutions in 1981 and 1988 condemning the funding of abortions through health care; and

Whereas, in order to qualify for public funding, medical procedures must be medically necessary for the purpose of maintaining health or preventing disease; and

Whereas, pregnancy is a normal physiological event, not a disease, and

Whereas, the use of public funds to fund abortions violates the conscience of many Canadians; therefore be it

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 75th annual national convention assembled, recommends that provincial councils request provincial and territorial governments to cease funding abortions; and be it further

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 75th annual national convention assembled, recommends that all members be asked to write to their federal, provincial and territorial ministers of health and their federal, provincial and territorial government members to protest the use of public funds to finance abortions.
