Through the standing committee of legislation we have the ability to help Jesus in the hard work of saving the world. Thanks to the research of my sub-committee chairpersons, life members Ann Devlin (British Columbia) and Dorothy Johansen (Alberta), please find below a list of bills related to League policies or resolutions that are before the House of Commons or Senate.
Encourage councils to act upon the issues they are most passionate about.
Through letter writing, members become “social justice in action!”
Bill C-277 Framework on Palliative Care in Canada Act passed second reading in the House of Commons unanimously and has been referred to the Standing Committee on Health for consideration. Encourage letters to be written in support of this bill and send them to the standing committee, Sixth Floor, 131 Queen St., House of Commons, Ottawa ON K1A 0A6 or e-mail them to [email protected]. The bill supports Resolution 2016.04 Amend the Canada Health Act to Identify Palliative Care as an Insured Health Service.
Bill C-37 An Act to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act and to make related amendments to other acts has passed through the House into Senate and has been referred to the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. Letters may be written to the standing committee. Also, Bill C-324 An Act to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (production of or trafficking in substances) has had first reading in the House. Both bills support Resolution 2005.07 Illegal Manufacture and Trafficking of Crystal Methamphetamine.
Bill C-226 Impaired Driving Act passed second reading in the House and has been referred to the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. This act would increase the penalty for repeat offenders and includes drugs as well as alcohol. Encourage letters of support to be sent to the standing committee c/o of the address noted above or e-mail them to [email protected]. This bill support Resolution 1988.11 Alcohol Advertising in the Broadcast Media.
Bill C-211 Federal Framework on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Act would enable governments to work together to develop a comprehensive federal framework for this disorder that effects many in society including those in the military. This bill has gone through second reading in the House and was referred to the Standing Committee on Health. Letters need to be written to members of parliament (MPs), and the ministers of health, national defence and veterans affairs and associate minister of national defence along with the prime minister (PM).
Bill C-262 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and Bill C-332 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Reporting Act have had first reading in the House and support Resolution 2013.01 Building Relationships and Partnerships with Canada’s Indigenous Peoples. Write letters to MPs, the minister of indigenous and northern affairs and the PM.
Bill C-316 An Act to amend the Canada Revenue Agency Act (organ donors) has had first reading in the House. This bill would authorize the Canada Revenue Agency to collect information for provincial or territorial organ donation registries and would support Resolution 2011.03 National Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Registry. Write letters of support to MPs and the PM.
Bill C-321 An Act to amend the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (prohibition of asbestos) and Bill C-329 An Act to amend the Canadian Environmental Act, 1999 (asbestos) both have had first reading in the House and both would support Resolution 2010.01 Chrysotile Asbestos. Write letters to MPs, the minister of environment and the PM.
Bill C-336 Right to Know Act has had first reading in the House and would prohibit toxic substances, supporting Resolution 2008.03 Toxic Substances in Household Products. Write letters to MPs and the PM.
Did you know that Bill C-11 An Act to amend the Copyright Act (access to copyrighted works or other subject-matter for persons with perceptual disabilities) came into force on June 22, 2016? This bill will benefit those with disabilities in the workplace as it will allow for those with perceptual disabilities to access materials in a format they can use without breaking copyright laws and supports Resolution 2002.03 Accessibility of the Workplace for Persons with Disabilities.
