Dear sisters in the League,

The Christmas season is such a special time of year that seems to bring out the best in people. The decorations, lights and music remind us of the joyous celebration of the birth of Jesus. I look forward to watching all the traditional and Hallmark Christmas movies, wholesome movies that do not require the warning of “may contain scenes of violence, coarse language, or nudity and viewer discretion is advised”. They are classic, beautiful stories where lessons are learned and love of family and friendship thrives. The best part of all is that they always have a happy ending. Movies can warm your soul on a cold night and give you the feeling of hope for the New Year.

In preparation for the upcoming festivities, encourage mindfulness of those less fortunate, those who may not have anyone to share Christmas with, or families that may not have the means to provide a dinner for their loved ones.
With Advent fast approaching, I would like to share an interesting idea, a “Reverse Advent Calendar”. In the spirit of giving, instead of having a calendar that a treat is taken from each day, replace the calendar with a basket where an item is placed each day. The items can be anything from toothpaste to mittens to a small gift. One of the best things about this idea is that it can be done as a family, class or group project. By doing it together, everyone feels they have contributed without being overwhelmed to do the giving on their own. Before long, a wonderful basket full of items may be shared to bring joy to a family in need at Christmas. It could become a meaningful tradition for families to share in the spirit of giving and of the Christmas season. For it is in giving that we receive. What a gift!

Please spread the word about the “Reverse Advent Calendar” as you spread good cheer to make the spirit of giving contagious. I look forward to hearing about how your councils put their baskets together. Encourage them to share their stories and pictures so we can create our own Hallmark moments!

Blessings and hugs,
