In his apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in America (1999), Pope John Paul II emphasized the Virgin Mary’s role in the birth of the church and her importance to the peoples of America. Her appearance in 1531 to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill had a decisive effect on evangelization. The influence of this appearance “greatly overflows the boundaries of Mexico, spreading to the whole Continent” (Pope John Paul II). The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th is an occasion for members to pray through the intercession of Mary, “Patroness of the Americas.”

Members of Holy Trinity Parish Council (Nanaimo, BC) participated in the Diocese of Victoria’s Day of Faith facilitated by Leah Perrault.

The topic was "Serving the Spirit: Transformation From The Inside Out". Leah challenged them to show up, listen, move forward, and BE the people of the Gospel.

The Calgary Diocesan Council hosted a very success

St. Mary’s Parish Council (Chilliwack, BC) offer

St. Mary’s Parish Council (Chilliwack, BC) offered the KAIROS Blanket Exercise in October. The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is a workshop that explores the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Blankets arranged on the floor represent the land and participants are invited to step into the roles of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

53 Participants were taken through an interactive and visual history lesson by three educators. Through listening, education and understanding reconciliation is possible.

On November 1, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish

On November 1, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Council (Grand Bend, ON) presented a cheque to the "We Can Help" fund at the Grand Bend Community Health Centre. They made this donation possible through raffle ticket sales.

The season of Advent arrives on Sunday December 3r

The season of Advent arrives on Sunday December 3rd, and a new liturgical year of the Gospel of Mark begins. Members, especially those less mobile or homebound, may enjoy the brief (six-minute) reflections for each Sunday of Advent offered by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on their website.

An Advent prayer is shared to supplement preparations for the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah whose birth members celebrate.

St. Michael’s Parish Council (London, ON) celebr

St. Michael’s Parish Council (London, ON) celebrated an enormously successful Membership Drive Weekend on October 28 and 29. Council members came out in full force to support the effort - displaying CWL sashes at every mass as they sat in the pews, and served as greeters, gift bearers, lectors and Eucharistic ministers. Other volunteers welcomed parishioners into the hall for coffee and treats, answered questions about the CWL and managed the membership table.

Many returning members took the opportunity to renew their membership over the course of the weekend and 25 new members joined as well! Congratulations to Darlene Charette, their Membership Chair, who came up with the idea of a "Membership Drive Weekend" and worked so hard with her team of volunteers to make it happen.

St. John Cantius Parish Council (Winnipeg, MB) org

St. John Cantius Parish Council (Winnipeg, MB) organized a sock drive with all of the parishioners and collected over 400 warm winter socks. They delivered the socks to Siloam Mission who provide care for the homeless and less fortunate in their city.

World Day of Youth is occurring this Sunday, Novem

World Day of Youth is occurring this Sunday, November 26, on the solemnity of Christ the King, and we invite you to join in praying the prayer in the photo sourced from www.usccb.org

Instituted in 1985 at the conclusion of the International Year of Youth and in conjunction with Saint John Paul II’s World Youth Day gatherings, this observance has taken place on Palm Sunday. In 2020, Pope Francis transferred the date to the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

On November 4th, the Sacred Heart Parish Council (Paris, ON) hosted a Women’s Retreat led by Dr. Josephine Lombardi.

The presentation consisted of two parts:
1. What does it mean to be created in God’s image?
2. Becoming Experts in Humanity.

Pope Saint John Paul II called for ‘’heralds of the Gospel who are experts in humanity, who know the depths of depths of the human heart.’’ Using research from her award-winning book, Experts in Humanity, A Journey of Self-Discovery and Healing, Dr. Lombardi explored some of the factors that influence human behaviour, showing how our cooperation with God’s grace can lead to authentic freedom.

The retreat was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants, and several of them want to follow-up by taking Dr. Lombardi’s course which gives them access to 12 videos. Everyone received a copy of her book. The retreat ended with a light lunch and engaging conversation.

Chartered on November 5, 1953, St Joseph Highland

Chartered on November 5, 1953, St Joseph Highland Creek Parish Council (Scarborough, ON), celebrated their 70th Anniversary.

The celebration was held with Bishop Vincent Nguyen, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Toronto; Fr Francis Folleh, Spiritual Advisor, two past SA’s: Fr Oliver Iwuchukwu and Fr David Okenyi,Fr Arinze Onwuzulike, Associate Pastor, CWL TDC President, Sue Lubowittz, 15 Council Presidents, including Betty Anne Brown Davidson, Past National President of Canada, and about 120 members!

After mass, they had a high tea luncheon and program in the hall. It was an amazing celebration.

Victoria Diocesan President, Bertha Landrie, presented St. Patrick’s Parish Council President, Linda Kubinec, with a 75th Anniversary Certificate at their celebration on Sunday, October 29. Bishop Gary Gordon celebrated the 11:00am Mass and a luncheon followed in the Parish Hall.

St. Lawrence Parish Council (Mulgrave, NS) gathered on August 26th to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the League. Their Mass was held by Bishop Wayne Joseph Kirkpatrick; along with Parish Priest, Father Allan MacPhie, and past Spiritual Directors Fathers Bernard MacAdam, Tom MacNeil, Bill Crispo, and Deacon Berkley Guthro.

Joan George received a Maple Leaf Service pin and her 40-year pin. Mary MacAskill received a Certificate of Merit. In celebrating this Centennial milestone, they honored the women who have dedicated their time, talents, and energy to making a difference.

This Sunday, November 19th, the Church marks the 7th World Day of the Poor.

“In 2017, Pope Francis instituted the World Day of the Poor so that “throughout the world Christian communities can become an ever greater sign of Christ’s charity for the least and those most in need”. (ORDO)

In his message for World Day of the Poor 2023, Pope Francis calls us “to acknowledge every poor person and every form of poverty, abandoning the indifference and the banal excuses we make to protect our illusory well-being.” He says: “Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor” (Tobit 4:7). In a word, whenever we encounter a poor person, we cannot look away, for that would prevent us from encountering the face of the Lord Jesus. Let us carefully consider his words: “from anyone who is poor”. Everyone is our neighbour. Regardless of the colour of their skin, their social standing, the place from which they came…”

St. Patrick's Parish Council (Carbonear, NL) displ

St. Patrick's Parish Council (Carbonear, NL) displayed a Truth and Reconciliation Tree in their Church in October. Members and parishioners placed orange ribbons on their tree to remember all the injustices that have affected Indigenous communities and prayed for healing.

St. George’s Parish Council (Hanna, AB) commissi

St. George’s Parish Council (Hanna, AB) commissioned local artist, Donna Brink, to design something that would memorialize the unborn. On the rock, which is situated in their church flower garden, she painted a baby nestled in angel wings. Fr. Rodel blessed the monument and then the League members, along with some parish members, recited the Prayer to the Unborn.

On November 11th, Canadians pause in silence to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so we may live with our freedoms and the values we hold dear to our hearts.

"This is a day to pray for peace, to consider what we are doing as individuals, as a community and as a nation to bring God’s peace into the world. This is a day when a believing community should rededicate itself by prayer and action to the ideals Jesus gives us in the Beatitudes.” (ORDO 2022-2023)
