Resolution - 05.8
MaterCare International Funding

Whereas, Approximately 529,000 women, mostly in the developing world, die every year from preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth; and

Whereas, MaterCare International, incorporated in Canada, is working to provide pre- and post-natal treatment and training programs through its birth trauma centre in Ghana and in future clinics; and

Whereas, Canadian International Development Agency no longer provides funding to MaterCare International; therefore, be it

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 85th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government to renew the funding of MaterCare International's birth trauma centres.

Requested Members' Action:
•  write letters to the prime minister, attorney general, minister of health, minister of foreign affairs and minister of finance urging the renewal of funding for MaterCare International's birth trauma centres
•  send a copy to your local member of parliament
•  invite your member of parliament to a meeting to speak about the Canadian International Development Agency's role and function
