Children Living in PovertySubmitted by: Manitoba Provincial Council
Whereas, In Resolution 89.10 Child Poverty in Canada, The Catholic Women's League of Canada urged the federal government ?to develop comprehensive national strategy programs to ensure that all families have adequate income levels to meet the basic costs of raising children?; and
Whereas, In 1989, the House of Commons unanimously resolved to ?seek to achieve the goal of eliminating poverty among Canadian children by the year 2000?; and
Whereas, Despite consecutive years of economic growth, more than one million children, or almost one child in six, still lived in poverty in 2001; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 84th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government to
take immediate action to eliminate child poverty, as promised in the 1989 House of Commons resolution, by identifying and addressing the root causes of child poverty
publish, within two years, a report on progress to date and plans for the future.

Requested Members' Action:
1. Write letters to the federal minister of labour and housing and the minister of state for families and caregivers; send a copy of your letter to your local member of parliament and the primce minster.
2. Write letters to provincial/territorial governments urging assistance to families in abject poverty.
