Education on Marijuana

Whereas, According to the Canadian Medical Association, marijuana is an addictive substance that is known to have adverse health effects; and
Whereas, According to the Canadian Police Association, marijuana is recognized internationally as a gate-way drug introducing young people to further drug use and abuse; and
Whereas, The use of marijuana may lead to significant increase in social problems and crime; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 83rd annual national convention assembled, urge the federal minister of health to initiate a comprehensive media campaign to educate the public about the detrimental effects and consequences of using marijuana.
Requested Members' Action:
Write letters to the federal minister of health requesting that immediate action be taken to provide funding to implement Canada's drug strategy, and to develop and implement mass media campaigns with warnings about the harmful use of substances of dependence, particularly marijuana.
Encourage parish council members to support school and community programs that assist young people in making healthy choices about drug use.
