Use of Antimicrobials and Their Impact

Whereas, Antimicrobials are all types of natural and synthetic drugs [antibiotics] that may kill or slow down the growth of microorganisms; and
Whereas, Continuous use of antimicrobials may develop resistance to and reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics prescribed for the treatment of human or animal infections; and
Whereas, Health Canada’s Advisory Committee on Animal Uses of Antimicrobials and Impact on Resistance and Human Health recommended changes to the way that antimicrobials are regulated, distributed and used in animals because of the ultimate impact that antimicrobials have on human health; and
Whereas, The Advisory Committee concluded that antimicrobial resistance is approaching crisis proportions; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 83rd annual national convention assembled, request the federal minister of health and the federal minister of agriculture and agri-food to act on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Animal Uses of Antimicrobials and Impact on Resistance and Human Health.
Requested Members' Action:
- Write letters to the federal ministers of health and agriculture and agri-foods requesting that they respond without further delay to the findings of the Advisory Committee on Animal Uses of Antimicrobials and Impact on Resistance and Human Health.
- Invite a doctor or pharmacist to speak to members about the proper use and disposal of antibiotics.
- Encourage members to become aware of the effect of antibiotics on their bodies and, ultimately, on the environment.
