Christian Prayer at National CeremoniesSubmitted by: Prince Edward Island and Alberta Mackenzie Provincial Councils
Whereas, The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of conscience and religion; and
Whereas, Respect for multiculturalism does not preclude Christian prayer at national ceremonies, given due respect for those who prefer not to share in it; and
Whereas, There are national occasions where public prayer is appropriate, such as the official memorial service held after the 1998 Swiss Air disaster at Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, the Parliament Hill service for the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the 2002 memorial service in Edmonton, Alberta, for the four Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 82nd annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government in consultation with the Canadian Council of Churches and other faith groups in Canada to develop official protocol that will include Christian prayer at national ceremonies where warranted.
