Hunger in CanadaWhereas, Surveys indicate that hunger in Canada is at an unacceptable level; and
Whereas, Cuts to Canada's social programs have contributed to the near-doubling of people accessing food banks from 1989 to 2000; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 81st annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government to implement the recommendations of the Canadian Association of Food Banks in order to eliminate the national crisis of hunger in Canada; and be it further
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 81st annual national convention assembled, encourage provincial councils to urge their provincial/territorial governments to implement the recommendations of the Canadian Association of Food Banks.
Detailed Action Plan
- Become familiar with recommendations of the Canadian Association of Food Banks "Hunger Count 2000", October 2000. Your provincial president and provincial chairpersons of resolutions have copies. Annual surveys are available from the Canadian Association of Food Banks, usually in October.
- Write letters to the prime minister and your local MP urging the implementation of the Canadian Association of Food Banks recommendations.
- Write letters to provincial premiers and ministers of finance regarding the recommendations and urging provision of adequate social assistance and affordable housing.
- Write letters to the Secretary of State for Children and Youth, Ministry of Human Resources Development urging increased effort for the elimination of poverty.
