Resolution - 01.01
Quality End-Of-Life Care

Whereas, "Quality End-of-Life Care: The Right of Every Canadian," the final report of the Senate Subcommittee to Update Of Life and Death of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology concludes that "a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to end-of-life [seems] to be assigned a low priority in the existing health care system"; and

Whereas, A great deal of evidence indicates "an increase in the numbers of total deaths and acknowledged changes in demographics, disease patterns, and health care institutions, there has not yet been the required shift of resources to end-of-life care"; therefore, be it

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 81st annual national convention assembled, support the recommendations of the Subcommittee to Update Of Life and Death of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology and especially urge early action on the following three recommendations:

  • "that the federal government immediately assess the need for home care and pharmacare for the dying and establish, in collaboration with the provinces, the funding required for these programs";
  • "that the federal government immediately implement income security and job protection for family members who care for the dying"; and
  • "that the Canadian Institutes of Health Research be encouraged to establish an institute that focuses on end-of-life issues facing Canadian of all ages with all medical conditions."
