Media Access to Trial Exhibits

Whereas, Section 486(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada presently leaves it to the judge's discretion whether to exclude all or any members of the public and the media from the courtroom for all or part of any proceedings involving child and/or coerced pornography; and

Whereas, A decision by a trial judge to allow the public and media access to the exhibits in cases of child and/or coerced pornography is the cause of additional anguish and grief to the victims and/or their families; therefore be it

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 79th annual national convention assembled, request the federal government to amend Section 486(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada to ensure that the public and media would not, under any circumstances, be permitted access to trial exhibits concerning matters related to child and/or coerced pornography.
