Genetically Engineered Foods
Whereas, genetic engineering involves the precise transfer of specific characteristics or genetic information from one organism to another; and
Whereas, the first food and food ingredients developed through genetic engineering have reached commercialization and more are nearing distribution; and
Whereas, Health Canada is the lead agency in ensuring food safety and has the responsibility for food labeling; therefore, be it
Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 77th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal ministers of health and agriculture and agri-food to ensure that all genetically engineered products produced in Canada and imported into Canada:
- be stringently and independently tested for long-term health and environmental effects before being offered for sale, with continued monitoring following commercialization
- be so labeled.
