Peace

Whereas, On December 8, 1987, Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, League members across Canada responded to a call to be united in prayer for world peace; and

Whereas, On that day President Reagan of the United States and President Gorbachev of the Soviet Union signed an agreement as a first step towards world peace; and

Whereas, There is an ongoing need in all of us to root out our own "seeds of war," and be reminded of our call and responsibility from baptism to bring the 'Good News' of peace into our world, and

Whereas, Throughout the world, peace can only be attained through our individual and collective efforts; therefore, be it

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women's League of Canada, in 68th annual national convention assembled,

  • encourages parish councils to set aside December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception for the promotion of world peace by means of a special celebration
  • encourages all members to (i) study the encyclical letter Pacern in Terris, (ii) the Holy Father's statements on peace published annually on January 1st, (iii) the pastoral statement of American bishops The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response, (iv) become beatitude women in response to Christ who said: "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall inherit the earth."
