Community Life Communique #5 URGENT: Our sisters and brothers in Haiti need our help immediately. Their country was devastated by a severe earthquake on Tuesday, January 12th. Many lives were lost and survivors are in urgent need of food, water, shelter, medical attention, and comfort as they search for and/or grieve lost loved ones. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is on the ground in Haiti providing emergency relief under Caritas, and, in Canada, is collecting funds to further relief efforts. Please consider making a donation both as councils and as individual members. In considering your donation, please keep in mind the following three points: 1. No donation is too small. There is an old Scottish saying “many a mickle makes a muckle” meaning every little bit adds up. One loonie from ten people makes ten loonies. Ten loonies from twenty makes two hundred. Even just putting out a basket at a meeting and asking for spare change can be fruitful, especially when joined to sister councils across the country. 2. When you give, you give twice. The federal government has pledged to match the donations collected by aid groups in Canada. 3. It is never too late to donate. The need for aid in Haiti will continue for a long time as much of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed. The CCODP will be there for the duration. Donations to CCODP can be made online, by telephone or by mail. The phone number for donations is (888) 664-3387. Cheques can be marked Haiti Emergency and sent to the following address: Development and Peace For further information please see the appeal from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops by clicking on the following link: http://www.cccb.ca/site/content/view/2749/1152/ We can help here at home by praying for the people of Haiti. As well, many people from Haiti or with roots and connections to Haiti live in Canada. Let us do what we can to help people in our communities deal with the grief and uncertainty caused by this disastrous earthquake. Your Sister in the League,
