Four arch/diocesan councils elected new presidents to represent them at the provincial table. </p> <p align="justify">Four hundred and three people gathered in Arnprior, in the Diocese of Pembroke, for the 61st provincial convention held July 5-9, 2008. All Eucharistic celebrations were held in the beautiful St. John Chrysostom Church. Speakers included Sr. Jocelyn Monette, nds, Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto Peter Hundt, D.D., Catholic Missions In Canada President Fr. Philip Kennedy, Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group Chair of the Board Debra Lefebvre and National President Lorette Noble. Workshops were hosted for presidents (Margaret Ann Jacobs), organization chairpersons (Shari Guinta), resolutions and legislation chairpersons (Provincial Second Vice-President Marlene Pavletic and Provincial Chairperson of Legislation Louise Gamelin), secretaries (Provincial Recording Secretary Maria Odumodu and Provincial Corresponding Secretary Marjorie Robinson), and treasurers (Provincial Treasurer Glenda Klein and Life Member Janice Deslauriers), with a round table discussion for spiritual advisors (hosted by Bishop Hundt). Provincial Chairperson of Spiritual Development Pauline Krupa presented the inspirational video <em>Celebrate What's Right with the World</em>. Gifted local talent and motivational speaker Maria Hockens provided the entertainment. </p> <p align="justify">Immaculate Conception/Our Lady of the Lake Parish Council, Sutton/Keswick, from the Archdiocese of Toronto received a free convention package for the greatest increase in membership (83%) and Hearst Diocesan Council was recognized for having a membership increase in every parish council. </p> <p align="justify">Two resolutions were adopted and forwarded to national council for consideration: ON.08.01 Bill C-484, Support for Unborn Victims of Crime Act and ON.08.02 Creating A National Strategy to End Child Poverty. A letter was forwarded to Governor General Michaelle Jean objecting to the awarding of the Order of Canada to Dr. Henry Morgentaler and petitions expressing members' disapproval were signed by many of the attendees at the convention. </p> <p align="justify">Continued support was offered to The Call of the Poor to honour the provincial council's $60,000 anniversary commitment. Thank you cards and donor cards were designed and issued by Glenda Klein to recognize personal gifts. </p> <p align="justify">Membership recruitment was the focus of <a name="OLE_LINK1"><em>The Catholic Register </em></a>centerfold with other advertisements for pro-life, family, and Christmas. Advertising was also included in the <em>Ontario Catholic Directory </em> with copies distributed to attendees at the provincial convention. </p> <p align="justify">The pamphlet <em>Catholic Education in Challenging Times </em> continued to be reproduced and circulated as well as <em>Building A Relationship With Your MPP</em>, a pamphlet prepared by Marlene Pavletic. </p> <p align="justify">Two applications were approved for the Bishop Bernard J. Papin Memorial Bursary of $1,000 for seminarians being trained to serve in Ontario. </p> <p align="justify">The acceptance of Theresa Bujtas (Diocese of St. Catharines), Bernadette Burgess (Archdiocese of Kingston), Patricia Crawford (Diocese of Hamilton), Andrea Dumouchel and Margaret Maloney (both from the Diocese of Pembroke) as national life members was celebrated. </p> <p align="justify">National bursaries were presented to six members to pursue studies in adult faith formation and/or youth ministry: Kendall Lane Freeman, Deb Hoyer, Bernardine Ketelaars, Marie-Theresa Lamphier, Lynn Lavictoire, and Shera Weiler. </p> <p align="justify">Special monetary gifts were forwarded to: Catholic Missions In Canada ($1,000) to recognize its 100th anniversary; Prince Edward Island Provincial Council ($1,000) to offset the effects of an ice storm; Catholic girls Leagues/college councils ($100.00 each) to help cover start-up costs; and to each arch/diocesan council ($1,000) to support attendance at the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations (WUCWO) North America Regional Conference preceding the annual national convention. Each arch/diocesan council was invited to host an outreach project with $2,000 made available to cover costs. </p> <p align="justify">The provincial council renewed memberships in the Catholic Health Association of Canada, Catholic Health Association of Ontario, Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute (CCBI), WUCWO, Catholic Biblical Association of Canada and subscriptions to <em>The Catholic Register </em> and <em>Living With Christ</em>. Membership was initiated with the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition and The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse. </p> <p align="justify">The president and president-elect met with the executive committee of the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops to discuss resolutions, current challenges facing the League and future plans. </p> <p align="justify">The provincial council was represented at and reports were filed for the following events: Family Violence Project of Waterloo Region event A Provincial Conference: Communities Working Together to End Violence Against Women; The Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul workshop Gender Violence: Out of the Shadows; MaterCare International events Making Motherhood Safe and 3 rd Annual  Project Isiolo Gala; Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education event Weaving the Catholic Partnership; The Canadian Catholic School Trustees' Association event Catholic Education: A National Conversation; CCBI events Practical Ethics in Home-Based Care and The Vocation of the Catholic Physician: Integrating the Practical, the Bioethical, and the Spiritual; a member of provincial parliament outreach training session; the National March for Life; Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention event Joining our Strengths to Prevent Suicide: Suicide and Addiction; Ontario's poverty reduction strategy roundtable discussion; Ontario Community Support Association/The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse workshop Making Connections: New Ideas for Better Care; Alliance for Life Ontario/Lakehead Life Support/Right to Life Association of Thunder Bay pro-life conference All Points North: Facing Truth; Rosary Sunday at the Martyrs' Shrine; and Life Chain. </p> <p align="justify">At provincial executive meetings, workshops were held on Parliamentary Procedure (Professional Parliamentarian Jim Lochrie), <em>Called to Be Living Stones </em> (National Chairperson of Communications Betty Anne Brown), Building Pro-Active Relations with the Media (Archdiocese of Toronto Public Relations and Communications Director Neil MacCarthy), Elections Procedures (Shirley George and Janice Deslauriers). Bishop Hundt challenged executive members spiritually with reflections on passages from St. Paul 's writings and on <em>Spe Salvi </em>(Saved in Hope). </p> <p align="justify">To recognize the special Jubilee Year of St. Paul, Pauline Krupa and her committee prepared and distributed an amazing resource package including videos, artwork, prayers and program ideas for meetings. </p> <p align="justify">It was a delight to forward congratulatory certificates to recognize the 50th anniversary of St. Mary of the People Parish Council in Oshawa and the 25th anniversary of St. James the Great Parish Council in MacTier. </p> <p align="justify">A provincial development day, organized by Shari Guinta for arch/diocesan organization chairpersons, was well received by these prospective presidents. Glenda Klein presented several workshops on finances in response to the need for this guidance. League development was ongoing in all arch/dioceses with the National Development Fund providing assistance in Alexander-Cornwall, Hearst, Peterborough, and Toronto Arch/dioceses.
