The disparity between men and women is a problem that transcends borders and is present both in rich countries as well as in poor nations. The data confirm that women constitute 70% of the world's poor. Poverty is generated by different but inter-related causes. Conflicts, distortions in the world markets, environmental degradation and forced displacement of people further exacerbate the situation. The adverse effects of these conditions are seen particularly in the weakest areas of the world.
