World Day of Migrants and Refugees
January 15, 2012
Words from Pope Benedict XVI

After the Angelus [on January 15, 2012], Pope Benedict noted that today is the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. He recalled the millions of refugees, men, women and children, the young and the old, who are searching for a place where they can live in peace. And he reminded the faithful that the theme of the Day – Migration and the New Evangelisation – means that migrants are not only the recipients of the New Evangelisation, but are also witnesses of the Gospel in the contemporary world. The Holy Father then greeted the representatives of the migrant community in Rome, who were present in St. Peter's Square.[read more]

Message of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI for the
World Day of Migrants and Refugees (2012)

Migration and the New Evangelization

Migration and the New Evangelization is the theme I have chosen this year for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees... The present time, in fact, calls upon the Church to embark on a new evangelization also in the vast and complex phenomenon of human mobility. This calls for an intensification of her missionary activity both in the regions where the Gospel is proclaimed for the first time and in countries with a Christian tradition. [read more]

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted…” (Eccl 3.1-2)

This is the time of year for endings and new beginnings. Greetings! Advent invites us to turn our gaze toward the “heavenly Jerusalem,” which is the ultimate end of our earthly pilgrimage. At the same time, it exhorts us to commit ourselves with prayer, conversion and good works, to welcome Jesus in our lives, to construct with him this spiritual building of which each one of us…is a precious stone. (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus Address 2nd Sunday of Advent, 2006)

Women Centred on Faith & Justice – precious stones indeed! As time is of the essence, first and foremost, I wish all of you an Advent that has time for prayer and contemplation and a Christmas filled with peace, love and friendship. During the year 2012, WUCWO will focus its attention on young people. It is providential that the Holy Father has dedicated his message for the XLV World Day of Peace to the youth. Christmas Message from Archbishop Richard W. Smith, President, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

Stars give us a sense of direction, and brighten the night. In the Book of Genesis (22.17), they are also a sign of God's blessing. They herald God's promise to Abraham that his and Sarah's descendants will be countless. In the Book of Numbers (24.17a), a star is again a sign and promise of what is to come: “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near -- a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel .” [read more]CWL Web site Now a Quick Link on Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops Web site

December 2011

The spirit of Christmas is enhanced by all that goes with it! The lights, carols, concerts, trees, gifts, and all the food and drink help highlight the essential truth that God enters into our world and makes everything possible and everything good!

Let's rejoice at the arrival of Jesus into our lives and hearts! As we reflect on His birth, we are taken to the Holy Land, the centre of our faith where it all began! The current conflict in the Holy Land has resulted in a very high level of unemployment and much human suffering. The first affected by conflict are women and children. The League is working on a project(s) to answer the pleas of Christian women in the Holy Land who would know that the League cares; partnerships can be developed through communication, prayer and financial aid. The Power of the Pen

National Chairperson of Resolutions Anne Gorman reminds all members of the importance of letter-writing to members of parliament. Members of parliament have confirmed on many occasions that personal letters from constituents are very respected and powerful communications tools.

Please consider using the power of the pen to share concerns with members of parliament, federal ministers and the prime minister regarding pressing issues that have come from the resolutions. The most recent government delegation to Ottawa suggests a timely focus would be Resolution 2011.02 Children of Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women or Resolution 2010.01 Chrysotile Asbestos. An Advent Reflection
National Chairperson of Spiritual Development
Margaret Ann Jacobs

During Advent, all members are called to find opportunities to become more aware of how God touches our lives each day so that we can be a sign of this love in the world. Daily meditation, liturgy of the hours, scripture reading and reflection, perhaps Advent calendars or Jesse trees may be a preferred avenue of preparation for the rebirth of Christ in our lives. Let this be an opportunity to activate the principles of all members as we pray together, “Dear Lord, during this Advent season mould our hearts in preparation for your return.” Specifically, I would like to encourage the renewal of the tradition of the advent wreath. What an amazing way to refocus on the value of family prayer, channel energies and highlight our responsibility as Christians to reach out to others in need.[read more]

International Day to Eradicate Poverty

Eradicating poverty continues to be a priority for members of The Catholic Women's League of Canada. Last year, the national executive signed on to the Dignity for All Campaign and many members have joined on their own. In her oral report at the 91st annual national convention, the national chairperson of communicty life focussed on the alarming number of people in Canada living in poverty, particularly children, and noted the desperate situation in some First Nations communities re poverty and lack of drinkable water.

October 17th was the International Day to Eradicate Poverty. Supporters of the Dignity for All Campaign wrote letters to the prime minister asking him to support private member's Bill C-233 An Act to Eliminate Poverty in Canada and to ensure that dufficient resources are made available to implement the steps needed to complement family and community efforts to eradicate poverty.

In keeping with the national focus on poverty in all its facets, and in support of Resolution 2004.02 Children Living in Poverty, members are encouraged to monitor the situation and contact their members of parliament.

A Message from WUCWO

WUCWO Secretariat
Paris, September 21st 2011

Dear Friends,

At the initiative of Pope Benedict XVI, a day of reflection, dialogue and prayer for peace and justice in the world will take place on October 27th 2011. The Holy Father will make a pilgrimage to the home of Saint Francis in Assisi and invites fellow Christians from different denominations, representatives of the world's religious traditions and all men and women of good will, to join him. The day will take as its theme Pilgrims of truth, pilgrims of peace.

Our President General has expressed the wish of WUCWO participating in this endeavor. WUCWO members worldwide are invited to recite Saint Francis' Prayer and the Prayer to Mary, Queen of Peace either personally or in a group for this intention, every day during the week prior to the Pilgrimage to Assisi.  If possible this could also include mass for this intention.

For more information on the pilgrimage, go to: http://www.radiovaticana.org/en1/articolo.asp?c=475108

Please see suggested prayers below.

God bless,

Liliane Stevenson

Prayer for the Intercession of Mary, Queen of Peace, Patroness of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations

  O Loving God, your Son, Jesus, came into this world to do your will and leave us His peace. Through the intercession and example of our Blessed Mother Mary, Queen of Peace, grant us the wisdom and humility to reflect that peace to the world. Inspire our thoughts, words and deeds to bear witness to your presence in our hearts. May your Hold Spirit fill us with every grace and blessing so that we may pursue what leads to peace for all humanity. Amen.

The Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master; grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Horn of Africa Drought Relief

At the 91st annual national convention of The Catholic Women's League of Canada in Toronto, August 14th-17th, the 650 members in attendance showed their response to the crisis of famine in the Horn of Africa.

Collection bags and baskets were placed throughout the convention to receive donations for Horn of Africa drought relief. Within three days, well over $4,000 was received, and as of September 6th the total rose to $5,000. The amount forwarded through the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) will be matched by the federal government. The figure is a conservative one as many members chose to make donations directly in order to meet the fund-matching deadline of September 16th.

Funds donated through CCODP will be channelled through Caritas International, a global confederation of 165 Catholic organizations that can respond effectively to humanitarian disasters and promote integral human development.

WUCWO Resolution 9: Produce a Statistical Evaluation of Poverty According to Sex

This month we want to provide a reflection on one of the Resolutions voted at our last General Assembly: Produce a Statistical Evaluation of Poverty According to Sex.

The disparity between men and women is a problem that transcends borders and is present both in rich countries as well as in poor nations. The data confirm that women constitute 70% of the world's poor. Poverty is generated by different but inter-related causes. Conflicts, distortions in the world markets, environmental degradation and forced displacement of people further exacerbate the situation. The adverse effects of these conditions are seen particularly in the weakest areas of the world. In all these cases, the statistical indices indicate that it is women who bear the highest costs and who are also often discriminated against in the receipt of aid. [read more]

600 Women on the Way to Toronto...

More than 600 women from across Canada will be making their way to Toronto in the coming days to take part in this year's Catholic Women's League National Convention which takes place August 14-17. For many parishes, the CWL are a staple, for almost a century providing support to strengthen the faith communities in which they live. Seeking Nominations for the Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards

Communities rely on strong support from a number of sources, including volunteers, businesses and not-for-profit organizations. That support could include activities like raising funds for community projects, giving employees time to volunteer or creating a new after-school program for at-risk youth, to list only a few examples.

Every day, local businesses, not-for-profit organizations and thousands of individuals volunteer their time, energy and skills to improve the well-being of families and communities across the country. They help make Canada stronger by creating change and inspiring hope.

The Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards is a new program that has been created to celebrate these Canadians who make a difference. A total of 17 awards will be given at both the regional and national level. Recipients will be eligible to identify a not-for-profit organization to receive a grant for $5,000 (regional award) or $10,000 (national award).

Those chosen for the awards must be nominated. The first call for nominations opened on July 12 and will close on September 9, 2011. Award recipients will be recognized at an award ceremony to be held in early 2012.

Do you know an individual or group, a business or not-for-profit organization that is making a difference in your community? Recognize their contributions and show your appreciation by submitting a nomination.

To learn more about the Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards, please visit http://www.pm.gc.ca/awards or call 1-877-825-0434.

" …there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world." So writes Clarissa Pinkola Estes (Women Who Run with the Wolves). She goes on, however, to remind us that "Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach".

How comforting to know we don't have to do it all! Understanding that each of us has the power to really make a difference, even if only taking baby steps, gives us great hope. So we continue to look for ways and means to alleviate misery, to hear the cry of the poor and to lift the burden of injustice for those whose rights and dignity are abused. [ read more ]

The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is closely following the events unfolding in Japan after the country was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami. Regular updates on the situation are arriving from Caritas Internationalis and messages of compassion have gone out from the entire Caritas network to Caritas Japan as it responds to this tragedy.

Members, Your Assistance is Needed: A significant breakthrough in support of the work of anti-poverty groups is the report called Federal Poverty Reduction Plan: Working in Partnership Towards Reducing Poverty in Canada by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development. This is the result of an extensive three-year study on the federal role in addressing poverty.

Many of the recommendations contained in this report support the need for a national anti-poverty strategy as well as increased provincial intervention, particularly in those four provinces which do not yet have specific strategies.

Resolution 2004.02 Children Living in Poverty asked the federal government to “take immediate action to eliminate child poverty, as promised in the 1989 House of Commons resolution, by identifying and addressing the root causes of child poverty and publish, within two years, a report on progress to date and plans for the future.” This has not been achieved even after all this time; it is hoped the recommendations in the Federal Poverty Reduction Plan will address these and more.

You are encouraged to review the recommendations of the Federal Poverty Reduction Plan and support the report by e-mailing your letter to The Hon. Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources before the March 10 deadline, or mailing her at the House of Commons, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 and no postage is necessary. Canada needs an anti-poverty strategy. Let's make our voices heard!

For more information on the anti-poverty stategy and what members can do, please vist Support the Report on the Make Poverty History Web site.

  1. February 2011 Be League: Despite its often saccharine sweetness and crass commercialism, Valentine’s Day does focus on what is central to being human, namely love. We are created out of love, in love, and for love, and are called to love by our loving Creator. During February, a month that features two special days centred on love, Valentine’s Day and Family Day, perhaps we can find some time to reflect on love. Our president, Velma, has a wonderful message in this e-newsletter that calls us to do exactly that....[read more]
  2. Education and Health Communique #3: As we move into 2011, my ongoing wish is that chairpersons of education and health have opportunities to grow in faith and continue to strive for justice for all. The committee focus on Women Against Poverty (WAP) is to teach the poor strategies to cope with low income. All members must believe that they can help the impoverished in communities across Canada. Consider the following Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for life.” [read more]

Reaffirming the Family Unit: "The Holy Father's prayer intention for February 2011 is: 'That the family may be respected by all in its identity and that its irreplaceable contribution to all of society be recognized.'

"The Pope’s invitation to pray in a special way for the family during the month of February encourages us to reflect on the Resolution n° 12 'Reaffirm the family unit' that we voted in Jerusalem.

"The family can see in Aquila and Priscilla - the couple that supported St Paul in his apostolic activity (Act 18, 1-3; Rom 16, 3-5 ) a model of awareness of their vocation and task.

"In Lumen Gentium - the dogmatic constitution of the Council Vatican II – it is stated 'Christian spouses, in virtue of the sacrament of Matrimony, whereby they signify and partake of the mystery of that unity and fruitful love which exists between Christ and His Church, help each other to attain to holiness in their married life and in the rearing and education of their children. By reason of their state and rank in life they have their own special gift among the people of God. From the wedlock of Christians there comes the family, in which new citizens of human society are born, who by the grace of the Holy Spirit received in baptism are made children of God, thus perpetuating the people of God through the centuries. The family is, so to speak, the domestic church. In it parents should, by their word and example, be the first preachers of the faith to their children; they should encourage them in the vocation which is proper to each of them, fostering with special care vocation to a sacred state'. (11d)

"We need to foster the awareness of the responsibility each member has inside the family so that it may express at its best the 'prophecy of love.'

"'Yet the excellence of this institution is not everywhere reflected with equal brilliance, since polygamy, the plague of divorce, so-called free love and other disfigurements have an obscuring effect. In addition, married love is too often profaned by excessive self-love, the worship of pleasure and illicit practices against human generation. Moreover, serious disturbances are caused in families by modern economic conditions, by influences at once social and psychological, and by the demands of civil society'(GS 47). Also the Holy Father, in his speech to the ambassadors held at the beginning of last January, expressed his fear before the attack on the religious freedom of families in certain European countries.

"We are called to witness the holiness of our 'domestic churches' aware that 'the family has the responsibility to provide an integral education.' (Social Teaching 242)

"In 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified the married couple Maria Corsini e Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi 'an example of a positive reply to Christ's question… an ordinary life in an extraordinary way…The riches of faith and love of the husband and wife Luigi and Maria Beltrame Quattrocchi, are a living proof of what the Second Vatican Council said about the call of all the faithful to holiness, indicating that spouses should pursue this goal, 'propriam viam sequentes', 'following their own way' (Lumen Gentium, n. 41).' (from the homily of the Holy Father John PauI II at the beatification of the couple).

"On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio let’s go back to it and discover what a treasure it is for our reflection and prayer." (World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations President-General Maria Giovanna Ruggieri)

WAP Reflection from National Chairperson of Community Life Barb Dowding: “One percent -- what does it look like to you? On April 26th, make your own personal list of all those little things you purchase that make you happy, that make your life nice and comfortable, things you give to those you love because you can. Then add it up if you dare. And if you are anything like me you will be astounded – not only at the dollar value, but more importantly at all those wonderful things that we have and so often take for granted.

If you are in a group or at a council meeting, take time to discuss and be mindful of your luxuries and blessings.”

  1. WAP Reflection from National Chairperson of Spiritual Development Margaret Ann Jacobs: “Serving others was the very core of the meaning of [Jesus'] life and ministry. Members of the League, rooted in these gospel values, are committed to this same service. Faith demands a response to the needs of others in a just manner. Justice requires that all actions in today's world be purposeful, respectful of the dignity and rights of all people, and mindful of a responsibility for stewardship. Throughout the coming year, chairpersons of spiritual development will be encouraged to prepare prayer services focussing on justice issues. Focus on a project relating it to the liturgical seasons (e.g. Christmas -- refugees) and work together on a Beatitudes for women Centred on Faith & Justice.”
  2. Theme Logo and Explanation: The League's logo for 2011-2012 is available for council use. The colours of blue and gold are the League's colours; the cross is the symbol of faith; the globe represents global justice, justice for all; the dove, a symbol of peace and faith, with outstretched wings embracing the world with peace, faith, hope and justice; the sprig of green, a symbol of hope, growth and the environment. Each symbol can provide councils with ideas for reflection, discussion and speakers. As you plan your calendar for 2011, please embrace the new theme and logo and provide opportunities for faith, fun and fulfillment! (National President Velma Harasen)
  3. Theme Bookmark: A bookmark, complete with theme logo and prayer will be included in the centre spread of the next issue of The Canadian League. Extra copies may be downloaded and printed for use at council meetings and to share with prospectivemembers.
  4. World Day of Peace (January 1, 2011): "This month, I would like to draw your attention to the Holy Father's message for the World Day of Peace 2011. The Pope encourages us to reflect about religious freedom as a path to peace. 'When religious freedom is acknowledged, the dignity of the human person is respected at its root, and the ethos and institutions of peoples are strengthened'(5) states the Holy Father in his message. 'Today too, in an increasingly globalized society, Christians are called, not only through their responsible involvement in civic, economic and political life but also through the witness of their charity and faith, to offer a valuable contribution to the laborious and stimulating pursuit of justice, integral human development and the right ordering of human affairs'(7). This sentence seems to prompt WUCWO to commit more and more to its goal to spread love, charity, respect and dialogue in every field. 'A healthy dialogue between civil and religious institutions is fundamental for the integral development of the human person and social harmony (9)' seems a strong encouragement for us to continue our commitment as peacemakers." (World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations President-General Maria Giovanna Ruggieri)
  5. Third International Day of Intercession for Peace in the Holy Land (January 29-30, 2011): "In view of the Third International Day of Intercession for Peace in the Holy Land, which will be held Jan. 29-30, 2011, we wish to send our greeting and encouragement to support your moment of confident prayer.

    "The Church has always made an effort to spread the message of peace, strengthened also by the words that the Risen One addressed to the disciples gathered in the Cenacle: 'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you' (John 14:27). Thus, it has committed itself in the different historical stages to support all those initiatives and activities that could sensitize every man and woman of good will to become not only heralds, but also agents of peace. It did so especially in those regions of the world in which there was suffering because of injustice, violence and persecutions. Today, the very important topic of peace and the search for it are more timely than ever. While we are again grateful to the Lord for the Special Assembly for the Middle East of the Synod of Bishops that ended recently, our thought goes today to the Holy Land, blessed by God with wonderful events of the history of Salvation, especially the Incarnation of the Word in Jesus Christ.

    "Benedict XVI's appeal in the homily during the Holy Mass to close the synod cannot leave us indifferent. As the Holy Father remarked, 'the cry of the poor and the oppressed finds an immediate echo in God, who wishes to intervene to open a way out, to restore a future of liberty, an horizon of hope.'

    "The Third International Day of Intercession for Peace in the Holy Land, sponsored by this pontifical council, is born from the desire to be involved concretely and strongly, living also a day of prayer.

    "This day gathers different associations, brothers and sisters of every region, and solicits them to make their voice heard in the whole world saying: We want peace, reconciliation and unity, beginning in Jerusalem!

    "We hope that this initiative, known already by many, will again be more appreciated and diffused, as the prayerful contribution of believers of the whole world in support of the Civilization of Love.

    "May Mary, Regina Pacis, obtain the blessing of God on all those who support and promote this day, and on all those who seek peace with a sincere heart!" (Cardinal Peter Turkson, President, Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace)

Women Against Poverty (WAP) – Change for Change will be a national project for April 26th, the feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

A series of reflections on poverty will be posted in the coming days. We hope they will provide food for thought and for action.

WAP Reflection from National President Velma Harasen: A little change from your purse or pocket can make a big change in the life of someone in need. Parish councils may choose a project that will aid in the eradication of poverty, helping women and children in poverty, in parish families or communities. With the permission of pastors, at Easter weekend masses and services, which fall just before April 26th, invite parishioners to empty their loose change into a basket. Promote this in parish bulletins with information on how the money will be used. Consider inviting women in neighbouring churches to join in the cause. On Tuesday, April 26th, donate the proceeds to the project selected.
